Rank and rent cities
Mid-size metros with a main city and 8+ smaller cities around it, from the City Picker in the Starter Kit, plus the two checks to run before you build.
Quick answer
The best cities for rank and rent are mid-size metros, not big ones: a main city with eight or more smaller cities (each under 200,000 people) within about 30 miles, and under about 1.5 million people in total. In the City Picker, the top small metros are Akron, Dayton, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and West Palm Beach. Start in the smaller cities, where page one is often directories and thin sites, and check competition for your trade before you buy a domain.
How this list was made: the City Picker scores 174 US metros and 2,400+ surrounding cities using GeoNames population data (approximate; places with 15,000+ people). “Nearby cities” means cities under 200,000 people within about 30 miles of the main city. These 25 get full points for nearby cities (8+) and for area size (under 1.5 million people in cities of 15,000+). The list does not check competition or contractor groups for your trade, that’s two quick checks you do yourself, below. Nothing here guarantees rankings, leads or income.

The Rank and Rent Starter Kit ($37) includes the full City Picker: all 174 metros with their nearby cities, the Shortlist Scorer, a trade-value table and a Page Planner that turns your winning metro into a page plan with the keyword in each H1 and URL.

Mid-size metros with a main city plus eight or more smaller cities around it. In the City Picker, the top small metros include Akron, Dayton, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Birmingham, Richmond and Des Moines. Always check competition for your trade before building.
Small. A new site rarely ranks for a trade in a big city. Build pages for the smaller cities around a mid-size main city, where the top ten is often directories and thin sites.
One metro: the main city plus the smaller cities around it. Start with one page per service, then add city pages only where you have something genuinely local to say, such as real projects, local permits or local prices. Near-copy pages for every city are what Google calls doorway pages.
GeoNames population data for places with 15,000+ people, compiled in the Starter Kit’s City Picker. Populations are approximate and can be several years old; verify on census.gov before you build.
There is no exact number. Some rank and rent guides suggest 75,000 to 250,000 people for the city you target. The City Picker looks at the whole area instead: a main city plus 8 or more smaller cities under 200,000, in an area under about 1.5 million. What matters most is who is on page one for your trade.
If Google’s top ten for “[service] [your city]” is mostly strong local contractor sites, seven or more, it is too crowded for a new site. Try a smaller city in the same metro, or a different trade.
No. The site is built and ranked online, and the contractor does the work. You do need contractors there to rent to, so check for active local contractor groups first.
On my sites that worked, the first lead took about 1 to 3 months after launch. Some sites take longer and some never rank. Keep each site cheap.
