Rank and rent for beginners
Eight steps from picking a trade to getting paid, in the order I’d do them if I were starting from zero, with real costs and no cold calls.

Quick answer
To rank and rent websites: pick a home-service trade, pick a smaller city where page one is beatable, build a small site with one useful page per service, get it indexed, wait for the first real lead, then rent the leads to one contractor under a written agreement and track every job. A lean first year costs about $208, and on my sites that worked the first lead took about 1 to 3 months.

I’m Adi Attias, and I’ve been doing rank and rent for about two years. Of my three sites, two pay and one never ranked. Here is each step in the order I’d do it if I were starting from zero. New to the model? Read what rank and rent is first.
Shortlist two or three home-service trades where people search with a clear contractor word (“deck builder”, not “deck ideas”). Big jobs like remodeling, roofing and decks suit a percentage deal; smaller, frequent jobs suit a flat monthly fee. Skip trades that are mostly emergency calls answered by big franchises. Score each trade out of 10 with the free rank and rent niche finder.
Pick a town, not a metro: roughly 30,000 to 150,000 people, near a larger city so contractors are around. Search “[trade] contractor [town]”.
This step decides whether the site ever ranks. Check a city with the free rank and rent city checker.
One page per service, plus a city page only where you have something genuinely local to say. For retaining walls in Carlsbad, that might be block walls, stone walls, repair and a cost calculator, then pages for Oceanside and Vista if their slopes, permits or prices differ.
Google’s spam policies call near-identical pages made for each location doorway pages. Sites built that way are the ones that drop in spam updates. About 15 useful pages beat 40 copies. The rank and rent website template lists every page and what goes on it.
WordPress on low-cost hosting, a fast plain theme, a form plugin and an SEO plugin. Every page gets an H1 with the service and town, a real cost range, what the job involves, a short FAQ and a quote form near the top. I build the pages with Claude from one brief and review every page before publishing.
Never invent licenses, reviews, years in business or a phone number you can’t answer. The site connects homeowners with a local contractor, so say so on the about page.
No. Google’s guidelines list lead generation companies as ineligible, so the site ranks in the regular results. The contractor keeps their own profile.
Prefer not to build each page by hand? SetToRank, the builder I made, creates the whole site from your trade and city, including the service pages, city pages, schema and lead form, and you can preview it free before paying. How it works.
Add the site to Google Search Console (free), submit the sitemap and request indexing for the homepage and main service pages. Then give it a few weeks; rewriting pages every day doesn’t help.
A few relevant ones help in a competitive town: local directories, suppliers and community pages. Don’t buy links or use private blog networks, which Google treats as link schemes. In a well-chosen small town, good pages and internal links often do most of the work.
When real quote requests arrive, not when a ranking report looks good. Check Search Console weekly for pages with impressions, and test that every form submission reaches your inbox. On my sites that worked, the first real lead took about 1 to 3 months. Some sites take longer and some never rank, so keep each site cheap.
Post once in local contractor Facebook groups. Say you have a site getting [trade] requests in [town] and you’re looking for one contractor to send them to. Screen the replies with four written questions: license, service area, response time and typical job size. Pick the most responsive one, not the biggest. Here’s how to find a contractor for your rank and rent site, with the exact post. No cold calls.
| Deal | Fits | What you track |
|---|---|---|
| 10% of each closed job | Big jobs and a first site with no history | Each closed job and both payment halves |
| Flat monthly fee | Smaller, frequent jobs or a site with steady leads | Lead count per month |
| Price per lead | Contractors who want to pay per lead only | Every real lead forwarded |
Send a one-page agreement before the first lead: what counts as a lead, the payment terms, reporting within 7 days, month to month. Copy the rank and rent agreement template, forward every lead the same day and log it in the free rank and rent lead tracker.

Pick one trade and one smaller city, build a small site with one useful page per service, get it indexed, and wait for the first real lead before looking for a contractor.
One. Get it to its first paid job, then repeat what worked in a new trade or city.
No. WordPress with a page builder, or an AI tool like Claude writing the pages, is enough.
Usually about 15: a homepage, one page per service, a cost calculator, a few genuinely local city pages, about, contact and legal pages.
A few relevant local links help in competitive towns. Don’t buy links or use private blog networks, which Google treats as link schemes.
When the first real quote request arrives. A contractor signs up for leads, not for a promise.
It depends on the trade. Many people use 10% of each closed job for big jobs, or a flat monthly fee for smaller, frequent jobs. Agree it in writing.
On my sites that worked, the first lead took about 1 to 3 months, then however long the contractor takes to close the job. Some sites never rank.
