Rank and Rent City Checker: Can a New Site Rank in Your City?

Pick a trade and a city, look up six things on Google, and get a score with the reasons behind it. Free, no sign-up.

How to use the city checker

  1. Pick the trade and type the city. The tool gives you search links for Google, Google Maps, the city’s population and local Facebook groups.
  2. Open each link and answer the six questions. It takes about five minutes, and you don’t need any paid SEO tools.
  3. Read the score and the reasons. Green points are working for you, yellow ones need a closer look and red ones are a real problem.

What each check tells you

  • Job value. With a 10% deal, your share of one job is a tenth of what the job is worth. A $5,463 retaining wall is about $546 to you; a $1,000 job is $100. Job values are national averages from Fixr, HomeAdvisor and the 2025 Cost vs Value report; your city may differ.
  • Population. Big cities have more searches but established companies own the results. Smaller cities and suburbs are where a new site has a real chance.
  • Reviews on the #3 map listing. The map results are where most local clicks go. If the third business has few reviews, local competition is weak.
  • Directories on page one. When Yelp, Angi and Thumbtack fill the results, there usually aren’t many strong local sites, and a focused site for one service in one city can compete.
  • Sponsored ads. Businesses only pay for ads on searches that bring them customers, so ads are a sign the leads are worth something.
  • Contractors nearby. You need someone to send the leads to. Fewer than five makes that hard.
  • Local contractor groups. These are where you find a contractor with one written post instead of cold calls. Use the contractor post generator to write it.

What the score means

70 or more: a good bet. Pick a name with the domain name generator and start building. 50 to 69: possible, but fix the weak spots first, often by trying a nearby smaller city. Under 50: try a different city. It’s a rough guide, not a prediction. My first leads came 1 to 3 months after launch, and one of my three sites never ranked, so treat any city as a test.

Check the trade too

A good city with a weak trade still struggles. Score the trade with the free niche finder, or see the 25 metros we ranked for ideas on where to look.

Frequently asked questions

Look for a city with real demand but weak competition: usually a smaller city or suburb where the third Google Maps listing has few reviews, directories fill page one, and there are enough contractors nearby to send leads to. The free checker scores those signals for you.

Often, yes. A new site has a much better chance against a few small local businesses than against established companies in a big metro. Very small towns can lack searches, so the trade’s job value matters more there.

No. Everything the checker asks for can be found on Google, Google Maps and Facebook in a few minutes.

No. It means the signals look favorable today. Ranking still takes months, and some sites never rank.
