Quick answer
Rank and rent startup costs for one site you build yourself are about $200 to $250 for the first year: about $11 for a domain, $143.52 for four years of shared hosting, about $40 for two months of an AI tool while you build, and a few dollars a month for a tracking number. Paid SEO tools, premium plugins, citations and courses can push it into the thousands. Use the calculator below to get your own number.

About $15 to $200 up front and $3 to $60 a month per site, if you build it yourself on free plugins. The low end assumes you prepay hosting for several years, which counts as an upfront cost. Paid SEO tools, premium plugins and done-for-you citations push it up. The bigger cost is time: you pay the monthly costs for months before a site ranks, and some sites never do. One of my three sites never ranked.
Because they count different things. The low end is a domain plus cheap hosting; the high end adds paid SEO tools, premium plugins, bought citations or links, and sometimes a writer or designer. Ippei, who sells a coaching program, puts a simple site at $50 to $100. None of those ranges include a course, which is usually the biggest single cost. Price only what one test site needs, then add tools once a site earns.
Here is a lean first year for one site, built yourself. Prices checked October 2026.
| Item | Year 1 cost |
|---|---|
| Domain (.com at Porkbun) | $11.08 |
| Hosting (Hostinger Premium, 48-month prepay, also covers years 2 to 4) | $143.52 |
| AI tool to write and build the pages (Claude Pro, 2 months) | $40 |
| Tracking number (Twilio, 12 months, before minutes) | $13.80 |
| WordPress, Elementor free, Yoast free, WPForms Lite, Google Search Console | $0 |
| Total | About $208, plus call minutes |
Year two costs much less, because the hosting is already paid: about $11 for the domain plus the tracking number.
Every line, with a lean and a paid option. Prices checked October 2026 on each provider’s own pricing page. They change often, and intro prices usually need a long prepay.

Hosting that costs $2.99 a month in year one can cost $11 to $18 a month after. Some registrars also renew domains at a higher price.
Without it you can’t count the calls a site sends, so it stops being optional once the site shows a phone number and starts ranking. A form-only site can skip it.
Multiply your monthly cost by the months until the site ranks. That’s real money spent before any income. The rank and rent income calculator includes it.
It’s free, but Google’s eligibility guidelines list “lead generation agents or companies” as ineligible. The map listing belongs to the business you rent to, so plan to rank the website itself.
The cost per site drops as you add sites. Hosting plans that allow several sites, SEO tools and call tracking accounts are shared. Domains, numbers and citations are per site. Set “sites sharing hosting and tools” in the calculator to see the difference.
Once you build several sites a month, the build itself becomes the biggest time cost. A builder like SetToRank (the one I made) generates each site from a niche and a city for $47 to $197 a month depending on how many sites you build. Worth it only if you’re past your first site or two.
On a 10% commission deal, often one. At the US national averages in the 2025 Cost vs Value report, 10% of a midrange bathroom remodel ($26,138) is $2,614, more than a lean site’s first-year costs. On a flat monthly fee, the first month’s rent usually covers them. The catch is getting there: the site has to rank, and a contractor has to close the leads. Many sites take months, and some never earn anything. Pick a trade where one job is worth enough with the free rank and rent niche finder.
Courses, aged domains and paid links. Courses and coaching are usually the biggest line, from a few hundred dollars to $10,000 for some programs (see the rank and rent course comparison). Aged domains and paid links come next. You don’t need any of them to test whether rank and rent works for you. Build one lean site first, using the rank and rent website template for the page list. If you’re still deciding whether to start, read what rank and rent is first.

Built yourself on free plugins, about $15 to $200 up front and $3 to $60 a month per site. A lean first year for one site is about $208 plus call minutes. Paid tools, plugins, citations and courses can take it much higher.
They include paid SEO tools, premium plugins, bought citations or links, and hired writing. One test site does not need any of those; add them once a site earns.
After the upfront costs, a lean site costs a few dollars a month for a tracking number, plus hosting once the prepaid term ends. Paid SEO tools or CallRail add $29 to $139 a month each.
Not quite. You need a domain and hosting, about $155 to start with a long hosting prepay. Everything else (WordPress, the page builder, the SEO plugin, the form plugin and Google Search Console) has a free version.
Time before income. You pay hosting, tracking and tools for months before a site ranks, and some sites never rank.
No. Free Elementor with the Hello theme is enough for a lead site. You need a form plugin such as WPForms Lite, which is also free.
Only if the site shows a phone number. Then it is how you count the calls you send a contractor. A Twilio number costs about $1.15 a month plus minutes, and CallRail starts at $50 a month billed yearly.
No. Courses range from a few hundred dollars to $10,000, but the free tools and guides cover enough to build and test one site. Spend on a course only if you want structure or coaching.
Google’s guidelines don’t allow lead generation businesses to own a Business Profile. The business you rent to can have its own.
Build the site for $47, not $5,000
